Jorge Mata is a Portuguese ceramicist based in the South West of England, UK. He studied ceramics at Plymouth College of Art (PCA) and his body of work consists of both sculpture and pottery ware.
Jorge’s ceramic journey began with him making abstract sculptures. By seeking inspiration from the irony and sometimes destructive nature of the world, Jorge would create sculptures which represent these themes, such as war, mutation and natural decay. These were often large pieces that would provoke an emotional response in the viewer due to their controversial aesthetic. Leaving viewers engaged and able to draw their own conclusions about his work.
Jorge also makes pottery ware, such as mugs, bowls, vases and decorative pieces. When making pottery Jorge likes to experiment with different forms, techniques and glazes. This is done to ensure that the finished product is unique and individual.
